Dangote Refinery Dispute: PENGASSAN Suspends Strike After FG Mediation, Warns of Fresh Action.

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has suspended its nationwide strike against Dangote Petroleum Refinery after the intervention of the Federal Government, but insisted the suspension is only temporary.

PENGASSAN President, Festus Osifo, who addressed journalists on Wednesday in Abuja, said the decision followed marathon negotiations that lasted into the early hours with government mediators and Dangote representatives.

The strike, which began on Sunday over alleged anti-union practices and the sacking of over 800 workers, disrupted gas and crude supply to the 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery and destabilised parts of Nigeria’s downstream sector.

Osifo admitted that the union was dissatisfied with the truce, noting that its main demand — the reinstatement of the sacked Nigerian workers — was not fully captured in the agreement.

  • “We are not happy with the terms of the agreement because it did not capture our main demand of recalling the 800 sacked Nigerians. But out of respect for government institutions, for the NSA, DSS, and the ministers who worked tirelessly into the night, we decided to suspend the action. If Dangote fails to keep its part, we will resume immediately, without warning,” he warned.

The PENGASSAN leader stressed that the dispute was rooted in workers’ fundamental right to freedom of association and fair welfare, accusing the Dangote Group of disregarding due process.

  • “Even with our misgivings, the National Executive Council resolved to take the moral high ground and suspend the strike in the interest of Nigerians and the government. But let it be clear — we are only suspending, not calling it off. Any slip from Dangote, and the strike resumes instantly,” Osifo added.

The Dangote Refinery, commissioned in 2023, has faced repeated clashes with labour unions, including NUPENG, which also accused the conglomerate of anti-union practices.
