The Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals has announced a major workforce reorganisation in response to what it described as repeated acts of sabotage within its 650,000 barrels-per-day facility.
In an internal letter dated September 24, 2025, and signed by Femi Adekunle, Chief General Manager, Human Asset Management, the refinery explained that the move was necessary to protect operations and address serious safety concerns.

The letter directed affected staff to hand over company property, obtain clearance, and await computation of their entitlements and benefits by the Finance Department.
However, a senior official of the refinery clarified in an exclusive chat with Naija Blog Daily that the development was not a mass sack, but rather a “system clean-up” designed to identify and curb sabotage.
- “Yes, the letter is correct. But the interpretation is wrong. This is not about unionism or indiscriminate dismissal. It is about protecting assets and plugging leakages. Once investigations are complete, those cleared will be reabsorbed,” the official explained.
He added that the exercise was carried out suddenly to prevent perpetrators from covering their tracks.
- “Some acts of sabotage have been noticed repeatedly, and the company must safeguard its operations. You cannot give prior notice in cases like this,” he said.
The refinery stressed that operations remain ongoing, with both Nigerian and expatriate staff still at work.

Meanwhile, Dangote spokesperson, Anthony Chiejina, did not respond to inquiries from Naija Blog Daily regarding the controversy.
The refinery, which began production in 2024 amid high expectations of ending Nigeria’s reliance on imported petroleum products, has faced challenges, including labour disputes with the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and disagreements with the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMA) over pricing and distribution policies.
Despite the turbulence, Dangote Refinery remains central to Nigeria’s ambition of achieving energy security and downstream market stability.
