A civil society organisation, Rights for Human Dignity and Justice (RHDAJ), has called on the Inspector-General of Police and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) to immediately arrest and prosecute the leaders of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) over what it described as an alleged plot to destroy Dangote’s Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) trucks.
The group accused NUPENG President, Williams Akporeha, and General Secretary, Afolabi Olawale, of engaging in actions that amount to economic sabotage and could destabilize the nation.

RHDAJ’s demand comes amid rising tensions following NUPENG’s opposition to the Dangote Refinery and MRS Holdings Limited policy against unionisation and the deployment of 4,000 CNG-powered trucks across Nigeria.
Speaking at a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Sunday, RHDAJ’s Executive Director, Iheanyi Kingsley, claimed there was credible intelligence that some overzealous members of NUPENG, in collaboration with non-state actors, were plotting to set fire to Dangote’s CNG trucks.
- “The rationale behind holding a nationwide strike and protest scheduled for Monday, September 8, 2025, is mischievous and ill-advised. This decision by NUPENG is unpatriotic and could damage the image of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. Our security agencies must act immediately to arrest and prosecute the union leaders before the situation escalates,” the group said.

RHDAJ further warned against a repeat of the violent #EndSARS protests of 2020, stressing that the scars of that crisis were still fresh in the minds of Nigerians.
Meanwhile, NUPENG has mobilised its members to commence a nationwide strike on Monday, accusing Dangote Refinery of attempting to “bring back slavery” through its handling of workers and unionisation.
Dangote Refinery had earlier announced plans to roll out its 4,000 CNG trucks on August 15, 2025, but the initiative has yet to take off.
