Cross River State Deploys Special Task Force to Tackle Illegal Mining.

In a bold step to curb the rising threat of illegal mining, the Cross River State Government has launched a special security task force to track and shut down unauthorized mining activities across the state.

This development was announced in a statement on Friday by Joseph Agbor, Special Adviser to the Governor on Solid Minerals. Agbor described illegal mining as a rapidly growing environmental and economic crisis that is wreaking havoc on the state’s lands and communities.

“Forests are being destroyed, rivers contaminated with chemical waste, and fertile farmlands are turning barren,” he warned. “This illegal activity is not just an ecological issue—it’s a human one.”

Economic & Human Impact of Illegal Mining in Cross River

Agbor stressed that unlicensed mining operations are denying residents legitimate jobs, depleting state revenue, and placing miners, often from vulnerable groups, in dangerous and exploitative conditions.

“What should be a source of pride and development is fast becoming a driver of destruction,” he said.

Call for Community Vigilance

He urged the people of Cross River to remain vigilant and report suspicious mining activities to authorities. Agbor encouraged communities to support legal, sustainable mining practices that benefit both people and the environment in the long term.
