Criminals Use Tinted Vehicles to Commit Crimes — Borno Police Command Warns.

October 4, 2025-Published by Cyril

The Borno State Police Command has issued a strong warning against the misuse of tinted vehicles across Nigeria, revealing that armed robbers, kidnappers, drug traffickers, and even terrorists often use such vehicles to hide their identities and perpetrate crimes undetected.

The warning was contained in a statement released on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Nahum Daso, who explained that recent Crime Frequency Data gathered by the Command exposed how tinted vehicles are being exploited by criminals to evade law enforcement surveillance.

  • “Through our Crime Frequency Data, evidence has shown that tinted vehicles have frequently been used to conceal or facilitate serious crimes. Armed robbers, kidnappers, drug traffickers, and terrorists have all taken advantage of translucent glass to hide their identities or illicit objects,” Daso stated.

Citing real-life examples, the police spokesperson recounted how a University of Maiduguri lecturer was murdered on April 2, 2024, and how the investigation into his death was delayed due to the inability of CCTV footage to identify the suspects inside a dark-tinted car used in the attack.

  • “After assailants whisked away the lecturer’s vehicle, investigators turned to CCTV footage. The car was visible, but the suspects’ faces were impossible to identify because the windows were heavily tinted, delaying justice at a critical stage,” he explained.

In another tragic case, three children lost their lives on September 26, 2025, after accidentally locking themselves inside a dark-tinted vehicle. Sadly, bystanders couldn’t see them in time to intervene due to the heavy tint, making the tragedy even more heartbreaking.

ASP Daso emphasized that the regulation of tinted glass is not meant to punish law-abiding citizens but to strike a balance between personal privacy and national security.

“Beyond these, countless cases link tinted vehicles to kidnappings, contraband movement, and armed robbery operations. Criminals exploit the anonymity that dark glass provides. Failing to regulate it leaves law enforcement handicapped and the public vulnerable,” he warned.

However, he clarified that the police are not imposing a total ban on tinted glass. According to him, certain exemptions exist — including factory-fitted tinted windows, VIP vehicles, and individuals with medical conditions such as photophobia (light sensitivity).

  • “Contrary to misperceptions, the Police are not imposing a blanket ban on tinted vehicles. Legitimate exemptions exist,” Daso added.

He further explained that the regulation will require all owners of tinted vehicles to register and obtain digital permits, which will capture biometric information, National Identification Number (NIN), and full vehicle details. This, he said, will create a traceable and verifiable database to aid investigations.

  • “This digital process captures biometric information, NIN, and full vehicle details, creating a verifiable database that strengthens investigations. When a tinted vehicle is linked to a crime, authorities can trace its owner swiftly,” he noted.

To reassure motorists, Daso stressed that the initiative will be transparent, corruption-free, and devoid of extortion, adding that any officer found exploiting motorists would face disciplinary action.

  • “The Nigeria Police Force has made its position clear: officers must act professionally, respect citizens’ rights, and avoid exploitation. Commands have been directed to enforce accountability mechanisms, and citizens are encouraged to report unprofessional conduct through the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) for prompt action,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters has also clarified that it is yet to receive an official order from the Federal High Court halting the enforcement of tinted-glass permits.

Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed this on Saturday while reacting to reports that a court had restrained the police from arresting or prosecuting motorists over tinted windows.

Naija Blog Daily reports that, as of October 2, 2025, the Police have commenced strict nationwide enforcement of the tinted-glass permit policy. According to the directive, all vehicles with aftermarket tinted glass must have a valid permit, or risk fines and possible impoundment.

As enforcement continues, motorists across Nigeria are urged to regularize their vehicle permits, while the Police maintain that their goal remains public safety, not persecution.
