The Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed June 27 to deliver judgment in the lawsuit filed by suspended Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan over her suspension from the Senate.
Justice Binta Nyako will rule on the case, which challenges the Senate’s decision to suspend the senator for alleged misconduct.
Akpoti-Uduaghan, who believes the suspension was politically motivated and unjust, filed the suit against the National Assembly, the Senate, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Senator Neda Imasuem, chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Code of Conduct.
Case Background
The case was originally assigned to Justice Obiorah Egwuatu before being transferred to Justice Nyako.
At Monday’s hearing, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s lead counsel, Jibrin Okutekpa (SAN), informed the court that all necessary documents had been submitted by the court’s directive.
Lawyers representing the Senate and the Senate President, Paul Daudu and Ekwo Ejembi, acknowledged submission of their own documents but accused Akpoti-Uduaghan of contempt of court.
They pointed to a Facebook post and a satirical apology published in newspapers on March 27, which they claim violated a court order.
Contempt Allegations and Counterclaims
Responding to the allegations, Michael Numan, a member of Akpoti-Uduaghan’s legal team, argued that the alleged contemptuous statements had no link to his client.
He also reminded the court that the plaintiff had earlier filed a similar motion accusing the Senate and other defendants of disobeying a previous court order.

“The alleged statement credited to the plaintiff had no connection with her,” Numan told the court. “It had no nexus whatsoever.”
As both parties await the court’s ruling, the June 27 judgment is expected to set a major precedent in legislative discipline and individual rights within the Senate.
