Social media influencers, Tobilola Olamide a.k.a. TobiNation, and Babatunde Peter Olaitan a.k.a. TDollar, have been sentenced to six months in prison each for Naira abuse in Lagos.

The judgment was delivered on Thursday, May 8, 2025, by Justice Alexander Owoeye at the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos. The duo was convicted for violating Section 21(1) of the Central Bank Act, 2007, which criminalizes tampering with the Nigerian currency.

The court, however, gave them the option of paying a ₦200,000 fine each.

According to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the offense took place at a social event on April 8, 2025, at 23 Macdonald Road, Ikoyi, where both men were seen in viral TikTok videos spraying ₦200 notes while dancing—an act considered illegal in Nigeria.

During the hearing, EFCC investigator Ibrahim Bukar testified that the Commission launched a probe after identifying the video content on TikTok on April 10. Both TobiNation and TDollar were later invited for questioning and admitted to the act.

“Olaitan confessed that he sprayed Naira notes in a nightclub after receiving a bundle of ₦200 notes from a fan,” Bukar stated.

Prosecution counsels, C.C. Okezie and H.U. KofarNaisa, presented the TikTok videos and confessional statements in court, which were admitted as evidence.

Justice Owoeye found both guilty and emphasized that Naira abuse damages the value and dignity of the national currency, warning that future offenders will face the full wrath of the law.
