The Federal High Court in Osogbo, Osun State, has ordered the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, to arrest the former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, over allegations of contempt of court.
The ruling came just hours after Yakubu officially vacated his position as INEC chairman.
The order followed a suit filed by the Action Alliance (AA), accusing INEC and Yakubu of failing to comply with a previous court judgment delivered by Justice Funmilola Demi-Ajayi in suit number FHC/OS/CS/194/2024.
In that judgment, the court had directed INEC to upload the names of the party’s National Chairman, Adekunle Rufai Omoaje, and other members of its National Executive Committee (NEC) on the commission’s official portal. The court also upheld the October 7, 2023, elective convention of the party, which produced Omoaje as chairman, describing it as validly conducted and properly monitored by INEC officials.

Despite INEC’s claim of compliance, the Action Alliance argued that the commission failed to upload Omoaje’s name, though the names of state chairmen and NEC members were already visible on the portal. The court expressed displeasure over this partial compliance.
The latest order, dated October 7, 2025, and signed by Mr. O.M. Kilani on behalf of the Court Registrar, directed the IGP to enforce the ruling.
The court stated:
- “It is hereby ordered that the Inspector General of Police shall cause the arrest and shall charge the defendant/judgment debtors for contempt and committal proceedings within seven days of this ruling.”
Additionally, the court awarded a ₦100,000 cost against the judgment creditors.
