Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from the Yelwata crisis took to the streets of Makurdi, Benue State, on Thursday to protest against worsening conditions in their camp, citing hunger, neglect, and the alleged diversion of relief materials.
The protesters blocked the major road near the Makurdi International Market, leading to serious traffic congestion as they demanded immediate action from the Benue State Government and humanitarian relief agencies.
Starvation and Deaths Reported in the Camp
According to the aggrieved IDPs, at least two people recently died in the camp due to starvation and poor health conditions. Protesters claimed that donated food, mattresses, and other materials never reached them, despite publicized support efforts.
- “There’s no food. Our children are starving. We sleep on bare floors. Mosquitoes are almost killing us,” one visibly distressed woman shouted while holding a placard.
Another protester added:
“We are suffering, and people are dying. We need help now.”
Accusations of Hoarding and Mismanagement
The protesters alleged that camp officials may be hoarding or diverting aid materials, including relief reportedly donated by Dr. Paul Enenche, Senior Pastor of Dunamis International Gospel Centre.
“The food and mattresses that Pastor Enenche gave us, we never saw them,” one man said.
They called on the government and humanitarian bodies to launch a full investigation into the alleged corruption and diversion of relief supplies.
IDPs Demand Government Action and Transparency
The displaced persons are urging:
- Benue State Government to intervene urgently
- NEMA, SEMA, and NGOs to audit relief distribution
- Accountability for corrupt camp managers
- Immediate supply of food, bedding, and healthcare support
