Vice President Kashim Shettima is currently leading a crucial National Economic Council (NEC) meeting at the State House, Aso Villa, Abuja. The agenda focuses on top national issues such as insecurity, state policing, and economic coordination.

The meeting is being held at the Council Chambers, with several state governors, deputy governors, and other key officials in attendance.

Notable attendees include:

  • Rear Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd), the newly appointed Sole Administrator of Rivers State, is making his NEC debut.
  • Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State, attending for the first time since his defection to the ruling APC.
  • Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq (Kwara), NGF Chairman
  • Governor Hyacinth Alia (Benue)

Key Focus: Insecurity and State Police

The NEC is expected to deliberate on rising insecurity in parts of Plateau, Benue, Zamfara, and Kwara and evaluate ongoing security strategies and efforts to establish a state policing structure.

The National Economic Council is constitutionally chaired by the Vice President and includes:

  • All 36 state governors
  • The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)
  • Key ministers and officials

Its mandate is to advise the President on economic policies and national development.

Recent NEC Activity

The last NEC meeting on February 20 launched the Nutrition 774 Initiative, a nationwide project to fight malnutrition in all 774 local government areas across Nigeria.
