Breaking: Tinubu Cancels National Broadcast, Set to Address Nigerians from National Assembly on Democracy Day.

In a surprise move, President Bola Tinubu has cancelled his scheduled nationwide broadcast for Nigeria’s 26th Democracy Day anniversary, opting instead to address the nation directly from the National Assembly on Thursday, June 12.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Segun Imohiosen, the Director of Information and Public Relations, explained that the cancellation was due to President Tinubu’s planned attendance at a special joint session of the National Assembly. The president will deliver his Democracy Day address from the National Assembly chambers rather than the traditional national broadcast.

“Due to President Bola Tinubu’s scheduled attendance at the National Assembly Joint Session, the Presidential National Broadcast on June 12 has been cancelled. President Tinubu will deliver his address from the National Assembly,” said Imohiosen.

While the national broadcast has been cancelled, other scheduled activities to mark Democracy Day will proceed as planned. This includes a special joint session of the National Assembly at 12:00 PM, followed by a public lecture at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja at 4:00 PM. The lecture will be focused on the theme: “Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms.”

In an earlier development, it was also announced that the traditional military parade marking Democracy Day would be cancelled this year, although no official reason was provided for the change.

The revised schedule for the 26th Democracy Day celebration is as follows:

  1. Presidential National Broadcast: Cancelled
  2. No Military Parade
  3. National Assembly Joint Session: 12:00 PM
  4. Public Lecture: 4:00 PM at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja

The committee has directed that only accredited State House correspondents will cover the public lecture, reinforcing its exclusive nature.

The adjustments have sparked discussions about the future of Nigeria’s Democracy Day celebrations, with many speculating on the implications of the changes and what they mean for the country’s political landscape.
