Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election, pledging to serve only one four-year term if elected.
Obi made the declaration during a live interactive session on X Spaces (formerly Twitter Spaces) on Sunday night, where he answered questions from supporters within Nigeria and the diaspora.

In a statement released Monday by his media aide, Ibrahim Umar of the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR), Obi dismissed rumours of a joint ticket with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, emphasizing that his focus is on genuine partnerships aimed at solving Nigeria’s core challenges.
- “If the coalition is not about stopping the killings in Benue and Zamfara, reviving the economy, boosting productivity, or putting food on Nigerians’ tables—count me out. Nigeria is at war. We must act,” Obi stressed.
Key Highlights of Peter Obi’s 2027 Declaration:
- One-Term Presidency: Obi committed to serving only one term to deliver impactful leadership.
- National Stability in Two Years: He promised to stabilise Nigeria within his first 24 months in office.
Three Core Priorities for the First 100 Days:
- Security
- Education
- Poverty Reduction
Obi criticised President Bola Tinubu over his reported 10-day trip to St. Lucia, saying, “St. Lucia is smaller than Ilorin, Nigeria’s 10th largest city. The President has not spent a night outside Lagos in any Nigerian state since taking office in 2023.”
On the Labour Party’s internal crisis, Obi confirmed efforts to align with the Supreme Court’s ruling, seeking INEC’s recognition for the Nenadi Usman-led faction.

On zoning, he said: “I support rotation between North and South. I implemented it as governor of Anambra State.”
Obi also pledged:
- A non-violent and transparent campaign in 2027.
- Zero tolerance for corruption: “My family will not be involved in government finances.”
- No political defection under his leadership: “There will be no cross-carpeting by elected officials.”
- He concluded with a strong call for accountable governance, warning against misplaced priorities by the current administration:
“While citizens are dying in Benue and Borno, our leaders are busy commissioning bus stops and going on holidays. That must stop. Governance must serve the people.”
