Top leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday held a closed-door meeting with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in a bid to resolve the party’s ongoing internal crisis regarding the rightful holder of its National Secretary position.
The high-powered PDP delegation was led by Ambassador Umar Damagum, the party’s Acting National Chairman, and included several prominent figures such as:
Senator Bukola Saraki – Former Senate President
- Governor Bala Mohammed – Bauchi State
- Governor Seyi Makinde – Oyo State
- Governor Dauda Lawal – Zamfara State
- Governor Caleb Mutfwang – Plateau State
- Senator Ahmed Makarfi – Former Governor of Kaduna
- Senator Seriake Dickson – Former Governor of Bayelsa
- Senator Ben Obi and others
INEC Seeks Clarity on PDP Leadership Discrepancies
Speaking at the INEC headquarters in Abuja, Damagum explained that the meeting was prompted by a letter from the commission, which raised concern over inconsistencies in the party’s communication, particularly regarding its 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
- He clarified that a recent Supreme Court ruling necessitated a clear legal definition of who the PDP’s recognized National Secretary is.
- In response, INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, stated that the commission convened the meeting based on the PDP’s request and due to confusion over the party’s official correspondence.
“For 99 NEC meetings, INEC received letters signed by both the National Chairman and National Secretary,” Yakubu said. “But the most recent NEC invitation was signed only by the chairman, raising concerns that required clarification.”

Yakubu further noted that INEC has received conflicting letters from the PDP at different times ,naming:
- Ude Okoye
- Senator Samuel Anyanwu
- Shokoya
as the party’s National Secretary, causing regulatory confusion.
“We are the regulators of political parties,” Yakubu emphasized. “We expect political parties to maintain consistency in their leadership structure and communication.”
Outcome Awaited as PDP and INEC Enter Working Session
As the meeting moved into a closed-door working session, both parties are expected to reach a resolution that will bring clarity to the PDP’s leadership and ensure compliance with electoral regulations ahead of the 2027 elections.
