The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released the full statistical breakdown of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results, revealing a concerning trend in candidate performance nationwide.
Out of 1,955,069 candidates who sat for the 2025 UTME, over 1.5 million candidates scored below 200, sparking fresh conversations about the state of Nigeria’s education system.
According to the official breakdown:
- Only 4,756 candidates scored above 320
- 7,658 candidates scored between 300 and 319
JAMB also revealed that 40,247 underage candidates were granted special permission to sit for the exam to showcase their exceptional academic potential. However, only 467 of them (1.16%) met the defined threshold for outstanding performance.

The board noted that these candidates will still be evaluated through three additional stages before any final classification is made.
This year’s UTME results continue to highlight the growing gap in educational achievement, with many experts calling for urgent reforms in Nigeria’s primary and secondary school systems.
