A fresh revelation has emerged in the ongoing terrorism trial of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu as a witness from the Department of State Services (DSS) told the Federal High Court in Abuja that Kanu confessed to smuggling a Radio Biafra transmitter into Anambra State in 2015.
The DSS operative, codenamed PWCCC, made this known during a hearing on Wednesday, claiming Kanu admitted to installing the transmitter at Ubuluisiuzor in Ihiala Local Government Area as part of his plan to promote Biafra secessionist propaganda.
🎙 Radio Biafra Linked to Incitement – DSS
The DSS had previously submitted audio recordings from Radio Biafra broadcasts, where Kanu allegedly incited violence and called for attacks on prominent Nigerians and public institutions. These recordings were admitted into evidence.
The witness also said Kanu confirmed during a November 4, 2015 interrogation that he personally smuggled the transmitter into Nigeria and inspected its setup in Anambra. A video of this confession was played in court and accepted as an exhibit.
⚖ Drama in Court: Kanu Denies Voluntary Statement
Tension rose when the Federal Government’s lead prosecutor, Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, attempted to tender a written statement allegedly made by Kanu. However, Kanu objected, claiming the statement was made under duress and without his legal counsel present.
Represented by Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, the IPOB leader said he was blindfolded, chained, and beaten while being transported from Lagos to Abuja in 2015. He alleged that the DSS obtained his statements through coercion and intimidation.
🧑⚖ Court Orders ‘Trial Within Trial’
In response to the allegations, Justice James Omotosho ordered a trial within a trial to determine whether the contested statement was obtained voluntarily or through force. He directed both parties to file their written addresses by May 29, and a ruling is expected by 2:00 PM on Friday.
During cross-examination, another DSS witness, codenamed PWAAA, denied Kanu’s claims, insisting the interview was conducted in a conducive and respectful environment.
