Mauritania’s Sidi Ould Tah has been elected as the 9th President of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group, marking a major leadership shift in Africa’s top financial institution.
The announcement was made on Thursday, May 29, 2025, after rounds of voting by the AfDB Board of Governors during the Bank’s Annual Meetings in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
Sidi Ould Tah is set to officially assume office on September 1, 2025, taking over from Nigeria’s Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, whose remarkable 10-year tenure as AfDB President will conclude later this year.
Tah emerged as the winner ahead of four other strong contenders:
- Amadou Hott (Senegal)
- Samuel Maimbo (Zambia)
- Abbas Mahamat Tolli (Chad)
- Swazi Tshabalala (South Africa)
The AfDB Board of Governors, made up of finance ministers and central bank governors from the Bank’s 81 member countries, cast their votes in a competitive selection process.
