BREAKING: FG Releases N50bn to Settle ASUU, Other Varsity Staff Allowances.

In a significant development for Nigeria’s education sector, the Federal Government has released ₦50 billion to settle earned allowances owed to academic and non-academic staff unions of federal universities. This move fulfills a longstanding promise made by President Bola Tinubu.

The announcement was made on Wednesday by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, through a statement issued by Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press at the Federal Ministry of Education.

Commitment to Education Reform

According to the statement titled “FG Releases N50bn Earned Allowances to Varsity Unions, Tinubu Reaffirms Education Priority”, the payment reinforces the Tinubu administration’s commitment to transforming Nigeria’s education landscape.

“This intervention is not just a financial transaction—it is a reaffirmation of our President’s belief in the capacity of Nigerian youth and the invaluable role academic and non-academic staff play in nurturing them,” said Alausa.

Toward a Knowledge-Based Economy

The minister emphasized that the fund release is part of broader efforts to reposition Nigeria’s economy from resource-based to knowledge-driven, through investments in education, infrastructure, and human capital.

He also acknowledged the cooperation of staff unions, noting that the current period marks one of the longest uninterrupted academic sessions in recent history, thanks to ongoing dialogue and mutual respect between the government and stakeholders.

President Tinubu’s Reassurance

President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s stance on keeping Nigerian students in school:

“The youth are the heartbeat of our country. Their future is extremely important to me and my administration. Keeping our children in school is not negotiable. It is my commitment that strikes in our institutions will soon become a thing of the past.”

This payment marks a step toward resolving lingering grievances between the federal government and university-based unions, particularly the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which has long demanded the release of earned allowances and other entitlements.
