BREAKING: FCT Doctors Begin 3-Day Strike Over Sacked Health Workers, Issue Wike Ultimatum.

Doctors under the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), Federal Capital Territory (FCT), have commenced a three-day warning strike starting Tuesday, May 6, 2025, in response to the unlawful dismissal of 127 health workers.

This decision was reached following an emergency congress held on Monday at the Asokoro District Hospital, Abuja.

Speaking to journalists, the FCT ARD President, Dr George Ebong, condemned the mass sack as inhumane, illegal, and poorly executed, calling for the immediate reinstatement of the affected doctors, nurses, pharmacists, lab scientists, and non-clinical staff. He further demanded the payment of their April salaries and the resignation of the FCT Civil Service Commission chairman, Mr. Emeka Ezeh.

“These workers were wrongfully labelled as ghost workers, absconders, or ex-employees even though they are actively working. Even managing directors of hospitals were affected—this is pure injustice,” Dr Ebong stated.

The doctors expressed outrage that such drastic decisions were made without consultation with the Health Services Board, the Permanent Secretary of Health, or key bodies such as ARD and MDCAN.

Dr Ebong warned that failure to meet their demands by Friday, May 9, would result in a total and indefinite shutdown of hospitals across the FCT.

“The FCTA should take responsibility. If 127 are ghost workers, how are FCT hospitals still operating? This decision lacks common sense and empathy,” he added.

Naija Blog Daily gathered that over 120 doctors attended the emergency congress, either physically or virtually, solidifying support for the industrial action.

The FCT health sector faces potential paralysis if the situation escalates, with patient care and hospital operations already under threat.
