BREAKING: Education Minister Proposes 2-Year NYSC Duration, Advocates Skill Training Expansion.

The Minister of Education, Olatunji Alausa, has proposed extending the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme from one year to two years.

Alausa made this known on Friday during a courtesy visit by the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Akinyemi Nafiu, at the Ministry of Education headquarters in Abuja.

In a statement published on NYSC’s official Facebook page, the minister emphasized expanding the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) Programme for corps members. He believes this will help young Nigerians become job creators and reduce unemployment.

“Let NYSC give people more opportunities to become job creators that will meet the needs of the country,” Alausa said.

He also recommended that more graduate teachers should be deployed to rural schools across Nigeria to address the teaching manpower gap and improve access to quality education.

The minister commended NYSC for embracing digital mobilisation systems, which he said have helped to tackle certificate fraud, especially among foreign-trained graduates.

Alausa further disclosed ongoing plans by the ministry to digitize the verification process for Nigerian students who study abroad. He assured that the ministry would collaborate more closely with NYSC to enhance educational development in Nigeria.

Speaking earlier, the NYSC Director-General, Brig-Gen Nafiu, praised the ministry for its reforms and called for the creation of a national database for Nigerian students studying abroad. He said this would assist in identifying fake certificates and degrees.

The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Abel Olumuyiwa Enitan, also pledged the ministry’s full support to strengthen its partnership with NYSC in raising the standard of education nationwide.
