Olayemi Cardoso, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has been awarded Central Bank Governor of the Year at the 2025 African Banker Awards, held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

The prestigious award, presented during a gala event on Wednesday, was conferred by African Banker magazine in recognition of Cardoso’s “bold and strategic” reforms that have revitalized Nigeria’s monetary policy landscape and strengthened the nation’s financial system.

Why Cardoso Was Honoured

According to a statement by the Central Bank on Thursday, the Awards Committee praised Cardoso’s administration for:

✅ Stabilising the naira
✅ Enhancing transparency in the foreign exchange market
✅ Re-establishing policy credibility
✅ Laying the groundwork for long-term macroeconomic resilience

“These efforts have restored investor confidence and repositioned Nigeria’s economy for sustainable growth,” the statement noted.

Who Accepted the Award?

The award was received on behalf of Governor Cardoso by Nkiru Balonwu, Adviser to the Governor on Stakeholder Engagement and Strategic Communication.

She was accompanied on stage by:

• Victor Oboh, Director of the Monetary Policy Department
• Olubukola Akinwumi, Director of Banking Supervision
• Aloysius Uche Ordu, Member of the Monetary Policy Committee

Organisers’ Statement

The organisers remarked that the award represents a recognition of the critical role the Central Bank has played in tackling market imbalances and restoring financial stability.
