BREAKING: Buhari Laid to Rest in Daura as Nigeria Mourns Former President.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari was buried on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, in a solemn ceremony attended by top dignitaries, military officials, and thousands of mourners.

The state burial, conducted by Islamic rites, followed the death of the former leader on Sunday, July 13, in a London hospital at the age of 82 after a prolonged illness.

The body of the late president arrived in Nigeria aboard a Nigerian Air Force jet and was received at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport, Katsina, by Vice President Kashim Shettima and other senior government officials.

From the airport, the remains were flown by helicopter to Daura, where President Bola Ahmed Tinubu personally received the casket, draped in the national colours.

At 5:50pm, funeral prayers were led by the Chief Imam of Katsina, after which Army Generals and Service Chiefs carried the body to the graveside. A 21-gun salute was fired by the military as a final tribute to the man who once led Nigeria as both a military Head of State and democratically elected president.

  • The interment took place at Buhari’s private residence in Daura, witnessed by family members, close associates, religious leaders, and select dignitaries, including former heads of state and serving governors.
  • The Federal Government declared Tuesday a national public holiday, enabling Nigerians to participate in mourning and honour ceremonies.

“He was humble and disciplined till the end,” said Ismaila Ibrahim, a long-time neighbour of Buhari in Daura. “We lived peacefully together for more than 50 years.”

Tributes continue to pour in from world leaders, statesmen, and citizens, describing Buhari as a patriot, a man of integrity, and a devoted servant of Nigeria who left an indelible mark on the nation’s political history.

As the final earth was poured over his grave, Nigeria bid farewell to a former leader who shaped the course of its modern era.
