Bauchi State Governor and Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, Bala Mohammed, has declared that the opposition party will bounce back stronger and reclaim power in 2027 despite the recent wave of defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking with journalists on Saturday in Abuja, Mohammed, who also chairs the PDP National Convention Publicity and Communication Subcommittee, said the party was quietly rebuilding its internal structure and public confidence ahead of the next general election.
While acknowledging concerns over the defection of some PDP governors and lawmakers, the governor assured that strategic efforts were underway to stabilize the party and unify its members nationwide.

- “I am very concerned about our governors leaving for the APC. But leadership comes with challenges. A lot is being done behind the scenes to keep the PDP united,” he said.
Mohammed accused the APC-led federal government of attempting to turn Nigeria into a one-party state by using state power and coercive tactics to suppress opposition.
- “You know the style of the APC government — they want to make Nigeria a one-party country. They have the power of coercion; they control everything. But Nigerians are watching,” he stated.
The governor, however, maintained that the PDP remained deeply rooted at the grassroots, insisting that defections would not weaken the party’s foundation.
- “Even those who defected are not finding it easy because most of the people at the grassroots remain loyal to the PDP. I am not going anywhere; my state is solidly PDP with no divisions,” he affirmed.
Mohammed further described the PDP as the only credible platform capable of rescuing and rebuilding Nigeria, recalling that many of the nation’s major achievements were recorded under PDP administrations.
- “Most of the measurable successes achieved by the federal government in the past were done by PDP governments. By God’s grace, if we stay united, we will deliver again. Some of us were underestimated before becoming governors, but here we are — that same resilience will define 2027,” he said.
At the party’s forthcoming national convention, Mohammed revealed that internal reconciliation and legal hurdles were being addressed to ensure a smooth process.
- “Many of the litigations you see are deliberate attempts to destabilize us, but we have no factions in the PDP. Compared to other parties, we are better organized — with one National Chairman, one Secretary, and one Publicity Secretary,” he said.
Responding to speculations about possible defections by some governors, Mohammed clarified that Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah had not communicated any intention to leave the PDP.
- “Governor Mbah hasn’t told us he’s leaving. It’s a personal choice, and as of now, he hasn’t indicated any such plan,” he said.
He also dismissed rumors about Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara defecting, describing him as a committed party member.
- “Governor Fubara is still with the PDP. He’s a humble young man who has faced many challenges and is handling them well,” Mohammed noted.

Reacting to reports linking former President Goodluck Jonathan to a potential 2027 presidential run, Mohammed said the PDP would gladly welcome any prominent figure willing to align with its vision for a better Nigeria.
- “People still believe in this party. The association of respected figures with the PDP shows our strength. We will produce credible leadership that Nigerians can trust to lead this nation out of its current challenges, inshallah,” he added.
Reaffirming his loyalty to the PDP, Mohammed expressed confidence that the party would produce visionary leaders capable of defeating the APC in 2027.
- “If someone leaves, it doesn’t end the party. Just like birds, they may go and return. Don’t blame anyone; leadership is tough, but we’re doing our best. The PDP will rise again,” he declared.
