Nigeria’s opposition politicians intensified their coalition-building efforts ahead of the 2027 elections as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar joined other prominent figures at a meeting of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition leaders in Abuja on Thursday.

Among the notable attendees were former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai; ex-Minister of Digital Economy Isa Pantami; ADC National Chairman and former Senate President David Mark; ex-Kwara State Governor Abdulfatai Ahmed; and former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal.

In a post shared on his official X handle, Atiku described the meeting as a resistance movement against entrenched political forces that have fueled poverty and insecurity in Nigeria.

  • “I am currently at the stakeholders’ meeting of the Coalition African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Abuja. It’s a meeting of the Nigerian people against the oligarchs who promote poverty and insecurity in the land,” Atiku wrote.

Photos released from the event showed Atiku exchanging handshakes with political heavyweights, including David Mark, Tambuwal, and Abdulfatah Ahmed.

ADC’s Role as a Third Force

The ADC coalition was formally adopted in July as the new platform for opposition figures seeking to challenge both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2027 elections.

The African Democratic Congress, originally launched in 2005 as the Alliance for Democratic Change, rebranded to ADC and was officially registered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in 2011. Since then, it has positioned itself as a centrist alternative and a rallying point for reform-minded politicians.
