ASUU Branches Suspend Lectures Nationwide Over Delayed June 2025 Salaries.

ABUJA —

Several branches of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have suspended academic activities across the country following the non-payment of June 2025 salaries by the Federal Government.

The development comes after ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC) reaffirmed a “no pay, no work” resolution, mandating branches to withdraw services if salaries are not paid by the third day of a new month.

Nationwide Lecturers’ Walkout Begins

At the University of Jos, ASUU branch chairman Dr. Jurbe Molwus confirmed the union had withdrawn from all lectures and statutory meetings, citing the delayed salary as a violation of labor expectations.

“The congress of our branch has affirmed the NEC position. Our members will remain off duty until salaries are paid,” Molwus stated.

He added that the branch’s strike monitoring team has been activated to ensure full compliance across faculties and departments.

ASUU ATBU: Delays Are Deliberate

In Bauchi State, lecturers at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) also stayed away from classrooms in response to a directive issued by the ASUU ATBU leadership.

Branch chairman Dr. Angulu Haruna accused the Federal Government of deliberate marginalization, noting a persistent delay in salaries compared to other government sectors.

  • “While others get paid promptly, university lecturers are always sidelined. They blame the delay on migration from IPPIS, but it’s clear there is preferential treatment at play,” Haruna said.

Skeletal Activity at the University of Abuja, ABU Zaria

At the University of Abuja, only minimal academic activity was recorded, as many lecturers reportedly stayed off campus.

Similarly, at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in Zaria, faculty members are complying with the NEC resolution. A senior lecturer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that most staff have withdrawn from teaching pending salary payments.

“We have resolved to suspend all academic duties until our June salaries are paid. This decision aligns with the national directive from ASUU,” he said.

ASUP Threatens Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has also threatened to join the industrial action if their June salaries are not paid soon. In a statement issued late Sunday, ASUP warned that the continued delay undermines morale and could spark a nationwide strike in polytechnics.

ASUU National Warns FG Ahead

Earlier this month, ASUU National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, had cautioned the Federal Government against any salary delay, warning that the union would invoke its “no pay, no work” policy if payments were not made on time.

  • “University staff should not be treated as second-class public servants. We will not hesitate to act if the government fails to meet its obligations,” Prof. Piwuna said during an interview with NaijaBlogDaily.

As of now, lecturers across multiple campuses are off duty, with growing uncertainty surrounding when normalcy will return to academic activities.
