Aregbesola’s Group Defends Osun Debts: “It Was an Investment, Not Recklessness”.

The Omoluabi Progressives, a political group loyal to former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, has defended the debts incurred during his administration between 2010 and 2018, describing them as strategic investments rather than financial recklessness.

In a statement released on Tuesday and signed by the group’s Organising and Publicity Secretary, Oluwaseun Abosede, the group said the projects executed with the borrowed funds were long-term assets that would now cost significantly more to build due to economic instability and inflation under the current administration.

The statement came as a response to Olawale Rasheed, spokesperson to Governor Ademola Adeleke, who had branded Aregbesola’s tenure the worst in Osun State history, citing huge debts and irregular civil servant salaries as part of the former governor’s legacy.

Rasheed also alleged that Aregbesola, now the Interim National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), had declared his intention to lead a political movement to unseat Adeleke in 2026.

But in a swift rebuttal, Abosede described the current administration as “directionless and trapped in political confusion,” focusing more on blame games than good governance.

  • “Let it be stated unequivocally: the debts incurred under the administration of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola were not borne out of recklessness or indulgence,” the group insisted.

Abosede clarified that the modulated salary structure introduced during Aregbesola’s time was a mutual agreement between the government and civil service unions, necessitated by the national economic downturn and crude oil theft, which affected revenue distribution to states.

He further noted that Aregbesola’s financial records were scrutinized and cleared by the National Assembly during his ministerial screening, confirming the transparency and accountability of his time as governor and later as Minister of Interior.

The group also referenced the massive, organic support Aregbesola received upon his return to Osun, calling it a testament to his continued popularity.

  • “No handouts. No rented crowd. Just raw, unfiltered love from the people. The spontaneous welcome must have deeply rattled his critics.”

Abosede urged the Adeleke-led administration to focus on development rather than attacking past leaders, warning that a failure to govern effectively could mirror the defeat of Adeleke’s predecessor, who similarly spent his term criticizing Aregbesola.

  • “The people of Osun have spoken — not with noise, but with presence and enthusiasm,” he concluded.
