APC Slams Makinde Over N63.5 Billion Government House Renovation, Labels It a Waste of Public Funds.

The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has fiercely criticized Governor Seyi Makinde over his decision to spend a staggering ₦63.5 billion on the renovation of the Agodi Government House, describing the move as financial recklessness and a misuse of public resources.

The APC’s reaction came through an official statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Wasiu Olawale Sadare, and made available to NaijaBlogDaily on Sunday.

Makinde’s Renovation Plan Sparks Controversy

Governor Seyi Makinde recently announced plans to upgrade the Oyo State Government House for ₦63.5 billion, sparking widespread criticism from civil society, political observers, and opposition parties.

The APC, Oyo’s main opposition party, described the move as outrageous and unjustifiable, especially at a time when citizens are facing economic hardship.

  • “This is another ugly example of financial mismanagement and misplaced priority,” the statement said.
  • “It reflects the governor’s growing track record of spending public funds on white elephant projects with no clear benefit to the average citizen,” Sadare added.

Government House Was Renovated in 2017 – APC Reminds Makinde

The APC questioned the rationale behind the renovation, noting that the Government House was last refurbished in 2017 under the administration of the late Governor Abiola Ajimobi.

“Structures like the Government House were built to last decades. The immediate past administration already renovated them to modern standards just before leaving office in 2019,” APC stated.

Allegations of Impunity and Cover-Up

According to the APC, Governor Makinde’s explanation to the Oyo State House of Assembly lacked transparency and failed to justify the colossal expenditure.

“His address to lawmakers was a failed attempt to cover up a clear case of corruption and abuse of power,” Sadare alleged.

The statement also referenced previous controversial spending, such as the purchase of exercise books for public schools at N2,100 per copy in 2019, which the APC had earlier condemned.

Public Reactions Mount Against the Renovation Project

The opposition claims that even those who once defended the governor are now speaking against what they call “another act of extravagance.”

“Even those who ignored our warnings in 2019 are now part of the voices demanding accountability from Governor Makinde,” the party said.

APC Calls for Immediate Reversal of Project

The APC urged Governor Makinde to rescind the proposed ₦63.5bn project, stressing that the funds could be better used to improve education, healthcare, infrastructure, and job creation in the state.
