Billionaire industrialist Aliko Dangote has officially announced his retirement as Chairman of the Board of Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc, marking the end of a historic 20-year leadership in one of Nigeria’s leading manufacturing companies.
According to a statement released on Wednesday by the company’s secretary, Temitope Hassan, Dangote’s retirement will take effect from June 16, 2025.
Dangote, who took the helm in 2005, played a pivotal role in transforming Dangote Sugar into a dominant force in Nigeria’s sugar industry. His tenure saw major expansion projects, bold moves in backward integration, and significant strides in corporate governance.

“In line with the principles of good corporate governance and succession planning, Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc hereby announces the retirement of our esteemed Chairman of the Board of Directors, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, GCON, effective June 16, 2025,” the official statement read.
The board highlighted key achievements under Dangote’s leadership, including large-scale sugar production projects in Adamawa, Taraba, and Nasarawa States, aimed at boosting local sugar production and reducing Nigeria’s dependence on sugar imports.
In a strategic succession move, the board also announced the appointment of Mr. Arnold Ekpe, a respected Independent Non-Executive Director, as the new Chairman.
“Following a rigorous selection and transition process, the Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Arnold Ekpe… a seasoned banker and former Group CEO of Ecobank,” the statement added.

Ekpe is expected to bring a wealth of experience to the role, drawing from his extensive background in finance, corporate leadership, and boardroom governance across Africa.
The company expressed gratitude to Alhaji Aliko Dangote for his “exemplary service and unwavering commitment to excellence,” as it begins a new chapter under fresh leadership.
