Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has ignited speculation about a possible defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), following strong statements questioning the party’s future and stability ahead of the 2027 elections.
During a constituency engagement meeting on Tuesday in Ikot Akpankuk, Ukanafun Local Government Area, Governor Eno used a telling metaphor to describe the PDP’s struggles, comparing it to a faulty airplane and implying he might board a “different plane” to reach his political goals.
“If you wanted to travel with Ibom Airline, and on the verge of taking off, it developed a fault that won’t enable it to fly, won’t you board the next available plane to take you to your destination?” the governor asked the crowd.
Hints of Possible APC Defection Amid PDP Turmoil
Governor Eno’s remarks come at a time when internal crises and a wave of defections are weakening the PDP’s grip across the country. His comments follow the defection of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to the All Progressives Congress (APC) — a move that has further shaken the party’s structure.
Although Eno has not officially declared a defection, political analysts view his statements as a strategic signal of possible alignment with the ruling APC ahead of the 2027 elections.
Empowerment Drive Reaches Hundreds in Ukanafun/Oruk Anam
Despite raising doubts about the PDP’s trajectory, Governor Eno reaffirmed his commitment to service delivery and development. During the event, over 400 constituents received various empowerment packages:
- 154 traders received grants
- 116 farmers were given agricultural support
- 4 individuals received ₦5 million each for business development
- 131 people received vital equipment and MSME support
The governor urged beneficiaries to use the funds wisely and warned against investing in Ponzi schemes or other risky ventures.
“Governance doesn’t end at elections. We are here to listen, assess your needs, and align them with our development plans,” he said.
Budget Inclusion and Grassroots Outreach
Eno noted that the outreach had already covered four out of ten federal constituencies in the state and assured constituents that their requests would be factored into the upcoming 2026 state budget.

“We will prioritize your needs based on available resources. What we can’t do now will be considered in future budgets. This government is for the people, by the people, and with the people,” the governor concluded.
Political Watchers Await Formal Declaration
While Governor Umo Eno has yet to formally announce a switch from the PDP, his statements have intensified political debates both in Akwa Ibom State and across Nigeria about the evolving structure of opposition parties and potential realignments before 2027.
