Renowned businesswoman and socialite, Aisha Achimugu, has reportedly begun a hunger strike while in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Her arrest comes amid ongoing investigations into allegations of criminal conspiracy and money laundering.
According to a statement released by her legal team on Tuesday in Abuja, led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mr. Chikaosolu Ojukwu, Achimugu was arrested by EFCC operatives at around 5 a.m. at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, shortly after arriving from London.

Recall that the EFCC declared Aisha Achimugu wanted in March 2025, following a probe into financial crimes involving her companies.
A Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice I.E. Ekwo, had earlier ordered the business executive to report to the EFCC on Tuesday and to appear in court on Wednesday. Her lawyer emphasized that she returned voluntarily in compliance with the court’s directive.
“Because of what transpired in court on Monday, our client came back to Nigeria based on an undertaking to appear before the EFCC. Unfortunately, she was arrested at the airport,” said Ojukwu.
He added that Aisha Achimugu immediately embarked on a hunger strike, describing her as a “prisoner of conscience” and alleging that her arrest violates the principles of due process and the rule of law.

Efforts by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) to get a statement from EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale were unsuccessful, as calls went unanswered.
