The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly criticised President Bola Tinubu’s renewed campaign for Nigeria to secure a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, describing it as a “misplaced priority.”
In a statement issued on Sunday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said it was “absolutely absurd” for the Tinubu administration to demand a bigger role in global security affairs while failing to effectively tackle insecurity ravaging the country.
The ADC recalled that Vice President Kashim Shettima, speaking on behalf of Tinubu at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, once again pushed for Nigeria’s permanent representation at the Security Council.
However, the opposition party argued that a government unable to protect lives and property within its borders lacks the credibility to demand a seat at the world’s top security decision-making table.

- “The African Democratic Congress finds it ironic that the Tinubu administration could be requesting a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council even as bandits kill Nigerians and seize territories at home,” Abdullahi said.
The party added that genuine global recognition would only come if Nigeria first demonstrates stability and security within its own borders.
