The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has reaffirmed its commitment to inclusiveness by pledging that 50% of elective and appointive positions within the party will be reserved for youths and women.
The announcement was made on Saturday in Lagos by the party’s National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, during the formal reception of defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party, and other political groups.
Delivering a speech titled “When Good People Unite, Nigerians Win”, the former Osun State governor and ex-Minister of Interior described the ADC as the true “party of the youth” with a vision to rescue Nigeria from hardship and poor governance.

- “ADC constitution boldly affirms the place of youth and women in leadership. This is not tokenism but a recognition that Nigeria’s future lies in giving voice, space, and power to those who have long been underrepresented. Since these demographics overlap, their combined representation will be no less than 50 per cent. This structure makes the ADC unquestionably the party of the youth,” Aregbesola said.
He emphasized that ADC is not a one-man party but a collective platform of patriotic Nigerians determined to rebuild the nation. He further warned that any government that fails to prioritize citizens’ welfare will ultimately lose legitimacy and collapse.
Aregbesola also took aim at Nigeria’s two dominant parties, insisting that both the APC and PDP have lost vision and now function as mere power-seeking platforms.
- “We must not repeat the mistakes of APC and PDP. Let us build a people-oriented party from scratch,” he urged members.

During the event, Abimbola Ogunkelu, a PDP Board of Trustees member, led the defectors, which included top party leaders such as former Lagos PDP chairmen Muritala Ashorobi and Tunji Shelle, PDP vice chairman (Lagos Central) Tai Benedict, and other stalwarts.
Ogunkelu said the movement marked a new era of progressive politics aimed at grassroots mobilisation and trustworthy leadership. Similarly, Segun Osho, who led a Labour Party faction into ADC, said their defection was necessary to help rescue Nigeria.
ADC Lagos chairman George Ashiru officially welcomed the new members, presenting them with the party’s flag, logo, and statement of purpose, while party chieftain Kolawole Ogunwale urged members to remain dedicated in action, not just words.
