ADC Clarifies Atiku Abubakar’s Membership Status.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC), under the leadership of Nafiu Bala Gombe, has clarified the membership status of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, following his recent registration in Ward 1, Jada Local Government Area.

According to the factional ADC, Atiku’s registration was not carried out by officials recognized by the party’s national headquarters, making it invalid under the party’s constitution. The party emphasized that Atiku has yet to complete the proper registration process with duly constituted ward executives in his area.

In a statement released by the Director of Media and Public Affairs, Christopher O. Okechukwu, ADC, the organization described the incident as a violation of established procedures.

  • “This registration was conducted through individuals who are not recognized by the ADC’s National Headquarters and therefore lack the authority to register new members. We have consistently urged Mr. Abubakar to complete his registration with the duly constituted and authentic party executives in his locality, a step he has yet to take,” Okechukwu said.

The party urged Atiku and his associates to act in accordance with the rules, stressing that ADC is not a platform for personal ambition but a movement dedicated to democratic renewal.

  • “The ADC national leadership finds this action inconsistent with the party’s constitution and procedures. We are concerned that it may be part of a broader strategy to leverage the ADC while awaiting reconciliation with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a pattern observed in the past,” he added.

Okechukwu further explained that once Atiku completes proper registration with officially recognized party executives, he will enjoy all rights and privileges as outlined in the ADC constitution. He also highlighted that the party is currently navigating a leadership dispute, with a case before the Federal High Court regarding the legitimacy of David Mark’s leadership.

  • “We urge the former Vice President and his coalition partners to approach this process with understanding. ADC remains committed to transparency, respect for existing leadership structures, and democratic processes,” Okechukwu stated.

Atiku officially joined the ADC earlier this week, signaling his alignment with the coalition-backed party ahead of the 2027 elections. The former vice president announced the move on his X account, posting a photo holding his ADC membership card with the caption: “It’s official.”

This move follows Atiku’s resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in July, amid ongoing internal crises within the party.
