Amaechi: Fubara, Wike’s Feud Over Money Sharing, Calls Emergency Rule Unconstitutional.

Former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has alleged that the ongoing political crisis between suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike is rooted in a dispute over money sharing.

Speaking in an interview with DW Africa, Amaechi dismissed the conflict as a battle for financial control, questioning why both leaders have not openly addressed the public about their grievances.

Amaechi Criticizes Tinubu’s Emergency Rule in Rivers

The former governor also condemned the emergency rule imposed on Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu, labeling it unconstitutional and a threat to democracy.

Unconstitutional Removal of Fubara: Amaechi argued that Section 188 of the Nigerian Constitution outlines how a governor can be removed—through death, resignation, or impeachment—and that Tinubu’s intervention was outside legal boundaries.

Alleges Political Motive for 2027 Elections: He suggested that the President’s involvement in the Rivers crisis is part of a broader strategy to oust governors who may not support him in 2027.

Questions Selective Enforcement: Amaechi criticized the justification for declaring a state of emergency in Rivers due to oil pipeline explosions, pointing out that worse security crises exist in the North and Southeast without similar federal intervention.

Rivers’ Political Instability and Election Controversy

The feud between Fubara and Wike reached its peak during the local government elections, which were marred by legal disputes and political boycotts. The All Progressives Congress (APC) faction led by Tony Okocha and the PDP faction under Aaron Chukwuemeka, both loyal to Wike, withdrew from the election, citing a lack of due process.

Amid the political turmoil, President Tinubu suspended Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Oduan, and the Rivers State Assembly members for six months, appointing retired Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas as the Administrator of the state.

Amaechi, however, urged Rivers residents to resist the emergency rule, calling for mass protests against what he described as a federal overreach into state affairs.
