The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially received a recall petition against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, marking a significant political development in Kogi Central Senatorial District.
Over 200,000 Signatures Submitted for Recall Process
The petition, submitted on Monday and received by INEC Secretary Rose Oriaran-Anthony, reportedly contains signatures from more than half of the registered voters in Kogi Central—over 200,000 constituents. The petitioners claim the submission meets the constitutional requirements as outlined in the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
This recall move follows Akpoti-Uduaghan’s March 6 suspension from the Senate over allegations of “gross misconduct” after a public dispute with Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The senator had previously accused Akpabio of sexual harassment, adding to the controversy surrounding her suspension.

INEC Vows to Follow Due Process
Acknowledging the petition, INEC assured us it would adhere to constitutional guidelines when processing the recall request. Oriaran-Anthony emphasized the commission’s commitment to due process and electoral transparency.
Kogi Central Constituents Push for Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Removal
Leading the recall effort, Comrade Salihu Habeeb, representing Kogi Central constituents, expressed confidence that this would be Nigeria’s first successful recall of a senator. He accused Akpoti-Uduaghan of failing to engage with her constituents, stating, “We need a credible representative who listens to the people.”
Similarly, Comrade Hamza Yakubu stressed that the recall petition is based on governance issues rather than personal sentiments. He urged INEC to act swiftly and conduct the necessary procedures to validate the recall.
Charity Jesse, speaking for Kogi’s youth and women, described the petition as a response to the senator’s alleged misconduct and failure to represent the district effectively.
Court Clears Path for INEC to Proceed with Recall
- The recall process gained legal backing after the Federal High Court in Lokoja lifted a previous restraining order on March 22. The court ruled that the recall process is constitutionally valid, affirming the constituents’ rights to seek new representation.
- This development sets the stage for INEC’s next steps, potentially making this one of the most high-profile recall cases in Nigeria’s political history.
