The recent re-arraignment of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been described as a new chapter in Nigeria’s judiciary, signaling a shift towards reconciliation and justice.
Abuja-based lawyer, Christopher Chidera, commended the fair and tension-free proceedings that took place last Friday before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja. He noted that the absence of bias, hostility, or confrontation between Kanu’s legal team and the Federal Government’s prosecution marks the beginning of a renewed judicial process.
Legal Experts Commend Reconciliation Efforts
Chidera praised the role of Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, a former Attorney General of the Federation, who apologized on behalf of Kanu for past courtroom tensions, particularly in proceedings before Justice Binta Nyako. In a surprising turn of events, Nnamdi Kanu himself asked for forgiveness, advocating for peace over confrontation.
Representing the Federal Government, Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, did not object to the new approach, allowing the court to proceed without distractions. Justice Omotosho, acknowledging the significance of the moment, stated:

“Nnamdi Kanu went to court yesterday. Dated March 21st, 2025 (Friday) see all that happened in the video below.
“A court of law is the temple of justice, with a judge at the head and lawyers as ministers. The work that goes on in a court of law is the work of God, because God is a God of justice.”
Judiciary’s Role in Restoring Trust
According to Chidera, this legal proceeding serves as a testament to the resilience of Nigeria’s judiciary, demonstrating that the rule of law, mutual respect, and reconciliation are integral to justice. He highlighted that Justice Omotosho’s leadership and Chief Agabi’s wisdom have set a precedent for fairness and integrity in the Nigerian legal system.
