A tragic incident struck the Oke Ero area of Ilesa, Osun State, on Saturday, as a 14-year-old boy lost his life after a forest security guard allegedly fired gunshots during a funeral ceremony.
Confirming the development, Osun State Police Command spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, told Naija Blog Daily on Sunday that two suspects have been arrested and transferred to the command headquarters in Osogbo for investigation.
- “One person was shot dead. The deceased is a 14-year-old. It happened at a funeral party in Ilesa. A guard was allegedly involved in the shooting. Three others sustained injuries, but two have been discharged from the hospital this morning,” Ojelabi said.
Eyewitnesses who spoke to Naija Blog Daily under anonymity revealed that the suspect was a member of the Nigerian Forest Security Service who was providing security at the event. They described the incident as an accidental discharge, noting that the ceremony was abruptly halted after panic erupted among guests.
One witness said,
- “The man was part of a security team performing a gun salute in honor of the deceased. Unfortunately, his gun went off accidentally, hitting the teenager who died instantly.”
In his reaction, the Osun State Commander of the Nigeria Forest Security Service, Hammed Nureni, confirmed that the officer involved came from Plateau State to attend the burial. He also urged the public to remain calm and allow the police to carry out a thorough investigation.

- “From what I gathered, the shooting happened while they were performing a gun salute. The operative fired into the air, and as he was lowering his weapon, it accidentally discharged again, killing a relation of the deceased,” Nureni explained.
The tragedy comes amid ongoing efforts by security agencies in Osun State to curb the misuse of firearms, especially after several warnings issued earlier this year by the police to hunters and private guards against accidental discharges.
Authorities have promised to conduct a comprehensive probe into the incident to ensure justice for the deceased and prevent future occurrences of such fatal negligence.
