Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has embarked on a spiritual pilgrimage to Rome, calling on God to intervene in Nigeria’s growing political, social, and economic challenges.

In a statement shared via X, the Anambra-born politician revealed that he used the sacred journey to “take Nigeria’s situation to God,” offering prayers for peace, unity, and leadership built on compassion and integrity.

Obi, who was joined by his wife, visited the four major Papal Basilicas in Rome — St. Mary Major, St. Paul Outside the Walls, St. John Lateran, and St. Peter’s Basilica. During their visit, they joined other Nigerian pilgrims in prayers for divine mercy and national renewal.

• “Despite our many challenges over 65 years of independence, God has kept us together as one nation. We are deeply grateful,” Obi said.

He further disclosed that part of the pilgrimage included passing through the Holy Doors of the basilicas, where they prayed for God’s forgiveness and asked for leaders “whose hearts He would touch — leaders of truth, humility, and selflessness.”

During their visit to St. Peter’s Basilica, the couple attended the Papal General Audience, where they listened to Pope Leo XIV’s message on hope, perseverance, and faith in hardship. Obi said the encounter strengthened his conviction that Nigeria’s redemption is possible through both faith and collective effort.

• “I firmly believe in God’s power and providence. But faith should not make us passive — it should inspire us to act. Every Nigerian must play their part with honesty, diligence, and love for our nation’s progress,” he added.

Concluding his message, Obi reaffirmed his belief in a renewed nation, saying:

“A new Nigeria is POssible — PO.”
