Senate President Godswill Akpabio has declared that no member of the National Assembly will be allowed to hold the legislature hostage, stressing that discipline, respect for rules, and institutional order are non-negotiable for the survival of Nigeria’s democracy.
Akpabio made this assertion in a statement released on Saturday by his media aide, Eseme Eyiboh, titled “The Trials and Triumphs of a Resilient Nigeria’s 10th Senate.”
He explained that the Senate’s decision to enforce its Standing Orders is not a clampdown on dissenting voices but a necessary measure to uphold order, decorum, and democratic values within the chamber.
- “Nigeria’s Senate is part of the global fellowship of parliaments that recognise chaos as the root of anarchy and order as the soul of democracy,” Akpabio said.
- “Our insistence on internal discipline and leadership respect is not personal or punitive — it’s an act of institutional self-preservation.”
The Senate President said the upper chamber’s resolve not to be held hostage represents its commitment to collective responsibility over individual grandstanding, a principle that strengthens all democratic parliaments.
- “When the Senate says it won’t be held hostage by the disruptive instincts of any single member, it’s reaffirming that collective duty outweighs personal ego,” he noted.
Akpabio drew parallels with legislative standards in other democracies, citing the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, where the authority of the Speaker and adherence to procedure remain sacrosanct.

He emphasised that the true test of a democratic institution lies not in avoiding disagreement but in managing dissent through decorum and adherence to rules.
- “Every democracy faces dissent; the question is how it’s handled. The 10th Senate has encountered provocations and personality clashes but has always chosen principle over populism,” Akpabio stated.
He concluded that the Senate’s continued enforcement of its Standing Orders reflects the strength and maturity of Nigeria’s democracy.
“Each time the Senate enforces its rules, it sends a message that our democracy is disciplined enough to govern itself — with respect, order, and integrity,” Akpabio affirmed.
