Security operatives attempting to fly with over $6.1 million in cash were intercepted and arrested on Saturday at the domestic wing of Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal 2 (MM2) in Lagos.

The suspects, whose number has not been officially disclosed, were reportedly apprehended during routine security checks while trying to board an Aero Contractors flight.

According to sources who spoke on condition of anonymity, the individuals were found carrying multiple boxes filled with undeclared U.S. dollars.

Naija Blog Daily gathered that the operatives had initially cleared several airport security points before being stopped at the foot of the aircraft, after Aero Contractors’ security noticed their unusually heavy luggage.

The matter was quickly escalated to Aviation Security (AVSEC) officials, who then handed the suspects over to the Department of State Services (DSS).

A senior official of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), who also requested anonymity, confirmed that the DSS later transferred the suspects to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for further investigation.

Another airport insider told NAIJABLOGDAILY that the suspects had claimed to be security agents escorting a suspect and exhibits, but failed to declare the cash or follow standard procedures required for transporting suspects on commercial flights.

The claim reportedly helped them bypass initial screening stages, but their activities drew suspicion at the boarding gate when AVSEC officers observed the oversized and heavy boxes.

Speaking with journalists, the Managing Director of Aero Contractors, Ado Sanusi, confirmed the incident, explaining that his airline’s security team became alarmed when the men refused to check in their heavy bags.

Sanusi revealed that upon questioning, the suspects admitted the bags contained money but said it had not been declared.

He said:

  • “Our security noticed some passengers trying to board our aircraft with heavy bags. When told to check them in, they refused and said the bags contained money. When asked if it was declared, they said no. They later claimed to be police or security agents escorting a suspect and exhibits. We informed them that there are proper procedures for such operations — which they failed to follow. As a result, they were not allowed to board and eventually left.”

Repeated calls and messages to Henry Agbebire, spokesperson of FAAN, and Igbafe Afegbai, Director of Aviation Security, went unanswered. Similarly, Ajoke Yinka-Olawuyi, Head of Corporate Communications at Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited, operators of MM2, did not respond to inquiries as of press time.
