Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has disclosed that former President Goodluck Jonathan will meet with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to discuss the ongoing detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Sowore shared the update on Friday through his official X (Twitter) handle after a private meeting with Jonathan in Abuja. He revealed that their conversation focused on the “urgent and compelling need” to resolve Kanu’s case “decisively and justly.”
- “Earlier today in Abuja, I met with former President @GEJonathan to discuss the continued incarceration of Mazi @NnamdiKanu. President Jonathan agreed that there is an urgent and compelling need to address this matter decisively and justly. He also promised to meet @officialABAT (President Bola Tinubu) as soon as possible,” Sowore said.

The activist thanked Jonathan for recognising the importance of addressing Kanu’s case in the interest of peace, justice, and national unity. He noted that Jonathan has now joined a growing list of public figures — including Atiku Abubakar, Femi Falana (SAN), and Senator Shehu Sani — who have called for Kanu’s release.
Sowore also urged other key figures such as Peter Obi, Chukwuma Soludo, Alex Otti, Francis Nwifuru, Peter Mbah, Hope Uzodinma, Oby Ezekwesili, and Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s John Mbata to add their voices to the campaign.
Nnamdi Kanu has remained in custody since 2021, following his re-arrest abroad and extradition to Nigeria on charges of terrorism and treasonable felony. Despite multiple court rulings ordering his release, the government has yet to comply.
