The Intercontinental Leadership Initiative (ILI) has described the appointment of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as a move that promotes regional balance and strengthens Nigeria’s democratic reforms.
In a statement signed by its Lead Trustee, Prince Stafford Bisong, the group commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the National Council of State for their decision, calling it a “landmark step” toward credible leadership and public trust in the electoral process.
Bisong praised President Tinubu for nominating a candidate with strong academic and professional credentials, saying the unanimous approval by the Council of State reflected unity and a shared vision for transparent elections.
He added that Professor Amupitan’s experience as a respected scholar, lawyer, and administrator would bring intellectual depth and integrity to INEC’s operations.

ILI also urged the National Assembly to confirm the appointment swiftly, emphasizing Amupitan’s competence, character, and capacity to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral system.
The organization further assured the Federal Government of its continued support in promoting voter education, civic engagement, and democratic ethics across Africa.
