Venezuelan opposition leader and pro-democracy activist Maria Corina Machado has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her relentless fight for democracy and human rights in Venezuela, the Nobel Committee announced on Friday in Oslo.

Machado, 58, who has been living in hiding for the past year, was recognised “for her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy,” said Jorgen Watne Frydnes, chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

Described as one of Latin America’s most courageous political figures, Machado has continued her activism despite repeated threats, government persecution, and restrictions by President Nicolas Maduro’s regime.

A trained engineer and founder of the civic group Sumate, Machado first gained prominence in 2002 when she led a campaign calling for a referendum against former president Hugo Chávez, a move that led to accusations of treason.

Her growing popularity has earned her rock-star status among Venezuelans, with supporters often crowding her rallies, waving flags, and offering her flowers. Although she was barred from contesting the 2024 presidential election, she endorsed ex-diplomat Edmundo González Urrutia, who continues to challenge Maduro’s leadership.

Reacting to her win, Machado said in a short video message, “I am in shock,” expressing gratitude to her supporters and to those who continue to fight for Venezuela’s freedom.

The Nobel Committee said Machado had become “a unifying figure in a deeply divided opposition” and praised her courage for staying in the country despite threats to her life.

Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump, who had publicly expressed his wish to win the Peace Prize, missed out once again. Nobel observers had ruled him out, saying his “America First” policies and exaggerated claims of peace efforts ran contrary to Alfred Nobel’s vision.

The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize includes a gold medal, a diploma, and a $1.2 million cash award, which will be officially presented at a ceremony in Oslo on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.
