The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) has condemned the prolonged detention of 21-year-old trainee nurse, Princess Nmesoma Chukwunyere, who has been held for over 80 days without trial by the Imo State Police Command at the notorious Tiger Base facility in Owerri.
RULAAC described her continued detention as a gross violation of human rights and “a disturbing test of law, conscience, and accountability.” The organisation recalled that Nmesoma, a student nurse at Mother of Mercy Hospital and Maternity, Orlu, was arrested on July 15, 2025, while working part-time at Evergreen Pharmacy, allegedly linked to a robbery that occurred weeks earlier.
According to her father, Mr. Gabriel Ekechukwu, Nmesoma was detained at the Orlu Police Division for three weeks, where she was reportedly tortured and forced to confess before being transferred to Tiger Base on the orders of the pharmacy’s owner, Mr. Declan. Despite no incriminating evidence found in her home or bank records, she remains in custody.
RULAAC noted that despite petitions dated September 18 and a formal demand from her father’s lawyer on October 2, the police have failed to release or arraign her in court. The group cited Section 35 of the Nigerian Constitution, which mandates that anyone arrested must be charged within 24 to 48 hours, depending on proximity to a court.

The organisation further urged the Imo State Commissioner of Police to investigate officers IPO Osinachi and Inspector Chidi Igwe for alleged torture and unlawful detention, as well as the pharmacy owner, Mr. Declan, for possible interference in the case.
RULAAC called on the Inspector-General of Police and the Police Service Commission to intervene immediately, stressing that Nmesoma’s case symbolizes the deep-rooted impunity and abuse of power within parts of Nigeria’s policing system.
- “No reform agenda can succeed when torture and impunity remain entrenched in police operations,” said RULAAC Executive Director, Okechukwu Nwanguma.
