October 4, 2025-Published by Cyril

The death toll from the reported shooting by Osun Amotekun operatives in Akinlalu town has climbed to four, following the death of another critically injured victim early Saturday morning.

Residents had earlier accused Amotekun operatives of storming the peaceful community on Tuesday, firing indiscriminately in the town’s center. The tragic incident initially left three people dead and eight others critically injured. However, Amotekun authorities have maintained that the operatives were caught in a 30-minute gun duel with armed suspects.

Speaking on behalf of the community, Mr. Babarinde Olamide condemned the alleged invasion, saying the operatives arrived in three vehicles, claiming to be pursuing a suspect who seized their locally-made weapon.

  • “On getting to the heart of the town, they began shooting sporadically at residents. Those who tried to flee were attacked with cutlasses. Three people were killed instantly, and several others were seriously injured,” Olamide said.
  • “The operatives even took the corpses and the injured away. Sadly, one of the victims died at the Osun State University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, after undergoing surgery early Saturday morning.”

In reaction to the incident, Governor Ademola Adeleke has ordered an immediate investigation and dispatched a government delegation to the affected community.

According to a statement signed by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, the governor expressed deep sympathy to the bereaved families and assured them of justice.

  • “I am a rule of law Governor. This matter is being investigated and any infraction will be dealt with within the context of the law,” Adeleke said.
  • “I have ordered a security council meeting to address this and other emerging security concerns, including the reported spillover of banditry attacks from Kwara State.”

He further appealed for calm, saying the government would not tolerate unlawful actions by any security outfit.

  • “I send my condolences to the victims of this unfortunate incident. I urge the good people of Akinlalu to remain calm while we act on this matter. I feel their pain, but investigations are already ongoing,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State has condemned the actions of the Amotekun operatives, describing the killings as extra-judicial.

In a statement by its Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, the APC urged the governor not to cover up the truth if he truly intends to identify those responsible for the tragedy.

  • “Amotekun must not be turned into an instrument of intimidation in Osun State, especially as the election season approaches,” Olabisi stated.

The Akinlalu shooting has sparked widespread public outrage, with many residents and civic groups demanding accountability and justice for the victims.
