The Peering Advocacy and Advancement Centre in Africa (PAACA) has raised concern over the conduct of Nigerian politicians ahead of the 2027 general elections, revealing that 90 per cent of electoral crimes are committed by politicians.
Speaking during a town hall event in Sokoto, organised in collaboration with the Federal Government and the MacArthur Foundation, PAACA urged political parties, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders to thoroughly interrogate and engage with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) guidelines and reviews to safeguard democracy.
- “Ninety percent of crimes during elections are committed by politicians. If citizens are empowered with the right information, manipulation becomes difficult,” said Nwagwu, one of PAACA’s leading voices, stressing the importance of voter education and civic empowerment.

INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner in Sokoto State, Umar Yusuf Garba, represented by the Head of Voter Education and Publicity, Abdullahi Sale Dawa, commended the initiative, describing the platform as vital in deepening public understanding of the electoral process.
Similarly, the Sokoto State Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Alhaji Babangida Kurfi, represented by Ms. Okeke Uche Ngozi, lauded the town hall as timely, saying it offered stakeholders the chance to reflect on electoral reforms, harness existing gains, and identify areas for improvement.
PAACA maintained that building citizen awareness and strengthening institutional accountability will be crucial in ensuring free, fair, and credible elections in 2027.
