Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of diminishing Nigeria’s once-promising future.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, Obi said Nigeria was on the path of greatness before the APC-led government took over. He recalled that after the return to democracy in 1999, Nigeria began building Africa’s largest economy and strengthening democratic institutions.
However, Obi lamented that under the APC’s “incompetent, corrupt, and divisive leadership,” the country has suffered immense setbacks.
- “In 1999, we overcame military dictatorship and restored democracy, beginning a renewed journey toward prosperity, freedom, and justice. But over the last decade, Nigeria has been greatly diminished by the APC’s failed leadership,” Obi stated.

He stressed that Nigeria had the potential, since independence in 1960, to become not just Africa’s giant but a global powerhouse. Instead, the current government’s policies have plunged over 15 million Nigerians into poverty in just its first year.
According to Obi, the ruling party continues to impose heavy taxes on citizens while offering little or no benefits in return.
