The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has launched two new initiatives to support women and families — the Mother-Baby Kit Project and the Abuja Breathe Fresh Air Project. Both programmes are designed to promote safe childbirth and reduce household health risks in the FCT.
Under the scheme, women received free mother-baby kits packed with essential delivery and newborn care items such as gowns, diapers, baby suits, solar lanterns, and sanitary pads. According to officials, the kits aim to reduce preventable maternal and infant deaths by ensuring mothers have access to basic but lifesaving supplies during delivery.
In addition, the FCTA distributed Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders to help families switch from smoky fuels like firewood and charcoal to clean cooking gas. The move will reduce respiratory illnesses caused by household air pollution, protect the environment, and cut down on deforestation.

Speaking at the launch in Abuja, Minister of State for FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to protecting mothers and children while advancing Nigeria’s clean energy transition. She described the kits and gas cylinders as part of the Renewed Hope Agenda aimed at improving health and living standards for residents.
Over 250 baby kits and 500 gas cylinders were shared at the event, with the FCTA promising to extend the programme across all six Area Councils. One beneficiary, Sadiya Aliyu, expressed joy, saying the support would help her deliver safely and cook more healthily without smoke.
