Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has faulted the Federal Government over its handling of the nationwide strike declared by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN).
Obi, in a statement shared on his X handle on Monday, expressed concern that the strike has already crippled operations in key oil and gas regulatory institutions, worsening the hardship faced by Nigerians and damaging the economy.
- “I am deeply concerned about the Federal Government’s silence in the face of PENGASSAN’s strike, which has already caused serious hardship for Nigerians and is hurting our fragile economy. The government must act decisively to end this crisis in a way that protects Nigerian citizens, workers, investors, and the economy at large,” Obi said.
The former Anambra governor further warned that labour disputes should be addressed promptly before they escalate into full-blown crises.
He added:
- “Addressing labour disputes early is the duty of any responsible government. Such issues must be resolved before they escalate into prolonged suffering for our people.”

Meanwhile, the Federal Government is said to have begun moves to calm tensions between PENGASSAN and the Dangote Petroleum Refinery. Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, has appealed to the union to reconsider its industrial action in the interest of peace.
The strike, which began on Monday, shut down activities at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).
