Tragedy struck Kadauri village in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State as a mining pit collapsed, leaving more than 40 miners feared trapped beneath the rubble.

Casualties and Rescue Efforts

Local resident Malan Ibrahim Hamida told reporters that at least 20 dead bodies have already been recovered by local rescuers. However, he noted that the true number of victims remains unknown, as no official register of miners exists.

Hamida revealed that those affected came from three different Local Government Areas — Jangebe in Talata Mafara, parts of Anka, and the host community Kadauri in Maru.

• “Only God knows the actual figure of the victims. The local rescuers among the miners tried to recover 20 dead bodies before the rescue mission was interrupted,” he said.

He expressed little hope of survival for those still trapped, stressing that it has been over 28 hours since the collapse, with no significant rescue effort from authorities.

Negligence and Unprofessional Mining Practices

Hamida further blamed the disaster on unprofessional mining techniques, pointing out that while miners often extract gold of reasonable quality, the unsafe methods make such tragedies inevitable.

Authorities React

The Chairman of Maru LGA, Hon. Bello Muhammad Jabaka, declined to meet journalists who sought clarification at his office. Meanwhile, attempts to reach the Zamfara Police Public Relations Officer, AP Yazid Abubakar, proved unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
