Fear has gripped residents of the Agbarho community in Ughelli North Local Government Area, Delta State, following a wave of child abductions that has forced many parents to keep their children at home instead of sending them to school.
Community members say more than 40 children have gone missing in recent months, with parents and families accusing security agencies of complacency in handling the crisis. Earlier this month, aggrieved residents staged a protest, alleging that some police officers demanded as much as ₦100,000 before launching investigations.

The tension escalated on Wednesday when an angry mob lynched and set ablaze a woman accused of attempted child kidnapping. The victim, identified as Mrs. Afornughe, was reportedly caught trying to conceal a young boy inside a sack.
Eyewitnesses said she was beaten and set on fire by an irate mob despite pleas for restraint. Some residents who recognized her were reportedly too afraid to intervene.
Police React
Confirming the incident, the Delta State Police Command condemned the act of mob justice. Police spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, said the command had launched a manhunt for those behind the killing.
- “We are on the trail of those who carried out the dastardly act. Nobody has the monopoly of violence, and no one should take the law into his own hands,” Edafe said.

He further assured that investigations are ongoing and urged residents of Agbarho to remain calm while security agencies address the disturbing cases of child abduction.
Rising Tension
The spate of kidnappings has fueled widespread fear, forcing some parents to keep children indoors and raising concerns about school attendance and child safety in the community.
Authorities have called for vigilance and lawful cooperation with security operatives to restore peace and order in the area.
